We have a few items from the mailbag this week.
First, you may recall that *Charlie Pendleton & Ben Richardson* were racing
for the EYC in the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup (www.nyyc.org/yachting/invitational-cup/2015-invitational-cup) on a boat
skippered by *Bill Lynn*. You’ll be pleased to know that they did EYC and
Fleet 5 proud, finishing 3rd in a fleet of 17 boats with 78 points over 12
races, one point behind NYYC in 2nd and just 7 points behind Royal Thames
YC who won it with 71 points. This regatta looked like a dogfight that
absolutely came down to the final race, but EYC sailed well and kicked
hiney. Congratulations to them. (*Editor’s note – Last time I used the
word hiney, it sparked a lengthy email exchange with Shannon Lane who
challenged the correct spelling of that word, and frankly, seemed to enjoy
the topic. In deference to Shannon and in the hope of not arousing her
again, I have used her spelling.*)
Also on the topic of Fleet 5 members sailing in other events, if you saw
Sonars with colored sails this weekend, CYC hosted its annual 2v2 team race
this weekend (which I assume is the reason Fall Series was cancelled).
Teams came from all over, including Annapolis and as far away as Perth to
participate. *Joe Fava & Elise Mazareas *were the event chairs, and
several Fleet 5 members participated, including *Mike Lane*, *Steve
Uhl* & *Karen
Lubeck* representing CYC and *Matt Hooks* sailing for EYC. Also several
folks helped out on RC and support boats, including *Nat Taylor*, the *Family
Adam* and bunch of others. Sorry if I missed anyone. We’ll post results
here next week.
I’ve been asked to remind you that Fall Laser sailing (which started this
weekend) will run pretty much every Sunday until Thanksgiving. You’ll find
the racing calendar here
https://sites.google.com/site/marbleheadlaserfleet/calendar. *Steve
Uhl *& *Charlie
Pendleton* will be there, and maybe I will too if I can get my head out of
my hiney (*there I go again*) and if it doesn’t compete with football. If
you’re interested, Fleet 5 member *Tom Daily* is the organizer and you can
reach him at tom.dailey@gfk.com.
Boy, I have to say, Fleet 5 members seem to be sailing a lot of stuff
having nothing to do with R19s, which is a hard pill to swallow considering
no one showed up for Fall Series. Do I sound like a jilted lover? But
hey, I get it. We are engaged sailors, and augmenting the breadth of our
racing experience makes us better, and ultimately, will make the fleet
tougher. Right? So go, race, have fun. Don’t worry about me, I’ll be
okay… To quote a variation on something *Kahlil Gibran* said: “If you love
someone, let them go. If they don’t come back, hunt them down and kill
them.”
The MRA awards party will be held the evening of October 14, 2015 at 6:30 at
the Boston Yacht Club. There will be free hors-d’oeuvres and a cash bar.
MRA will hand out season awards as well as crew awards for each fleet.
Circle the date.
Finally, the first tier of the off-season Doyle Sails discount expires
9/30/15. Doyle is offering a 20% discount through 9/30 and then will
gradually reduce the discount over the next couple of months. So if you
want to save money on next year’s sails, do it today.

Week 19 will include the 2nd and final day of Fall Series, which
regrettably, will bring our 2015 season to a close. The Fleet 5 awards
party is tentatively scheduled for the first Saturday in November, so for
now please hold that date. Hopefully we can provide you the final date
and other specifics next week. –kp
