Last Week’s Racing
There was no racing this week. The scheduled Twilight was called due to thunderstorms and there was no MRA racing scheduled.
As to the twilight, here’s what I got from Steve Uhl. “It was a beautiful day until 5:30, but then we got a big storm. We hoped it might bypass Marblehead but it didn’t. We got rained on before we could get back ashore. There was no viable option to sail.”
Here’s a bit more color from Tim McCaffrey. “What was interesting was, although the 5:30 radar predicted the thundershowers to pass north, our visual observations were showing the storm turning south towards us. At 5:45 the radar projections changed to match. Dave Graham abandoned the race and all 5 Rhodes 19s were spared. Fortunately the Town Class were not present due to their nationals this weekend. The photo from the Twilight Booth shows the moored boats clocking around to the north where the storm clouds are coming from.”
Well, there you have it. In case you’re interested, here is a look at the Series 2 and season standing heading into the last race.
So, in Cup competition, with no racing, there were no changes to the Week 13 standings. The top 10 are listed below.
Week 14 racing will include Nationals. The practice race will be Thursday at 2pm. Day 1 will be Friday with a warning no earlier than noon. Days 2 & 3 will be Saturday and Sunday, with warnings no earlier than 11am.
Other News, Notices & Miscellaneous Scuttlebutt
Fleet 5ers Hit the Hinman –Big congrats to Team CYC on their second-place finish at last weekend’s Hinman Masters at NYYC. Sailing in this incredibly competitive event against teams from across the country is pretty darn impressive! Fleet 5ers sailing for Corinthian were Joe Fava, Renee Heffernan, Yatti Harsono, and Former Commodore Jim Raisides.
And While We’re At It – Speaking of high-profile team racing regattas, a belated congratulation to our very own Adam Roberts who was part of CYC’s winning Morgan Cup team two weekends ago! Love to see our sailors crushing it on the big stage.
If You Spin, Send It In – We heard of one spin this week dating all the way back to Race Week. Here is the note from Dave Reynolds. “McLovin had a chance to practice twirling during the last race of RW. Most of the fleet likely knows this already since, by my count, at least 10 of you sailed past us as we completed our turns. This incident provided a memorable reminder that (1) the rules regarding port tack boats inside 3 boat lengths are tough, (2) the Gabriel’s are a great addition to the fleet (fair and getting fast at an unbelievable rate), (3) it’s good to know the alternate penalty specifics, and (4) I have an incredibly patient and understanding boat partner.”
Thanks, Dave, for leaving it on the course (for all to see). The Spin Tracker is appropriately updated.
A reminder that if you spin, please let me know at kpandapas@comcast.net with the subject line ‘Spins.’
Name That Boat – No, not the Ensign! The one in front.

Old friend and former National Champ Chris Schreiber responded to last week’s cruise news with this. “What, you were up in Long Cove and didn’t reach out? I could have jumped on my paddleboard and come out for a beverage!”
Yup, totally our bad. Boy is my face red. We had completely forgotten that he and Deb live there.
He went on to comment on the picture of the Rhodes with 10 kids aboard (below).
“The Rhodes belongs to St George Community sailing. I was out coaching the older kids for an upcoming 420 regatta, so they loaded all the younger kids on Maggie B for a sail. Lots of bodies but small ones at least! Although the record I believe is held by my son when he loaded 10 of his high school buddies onto our R19 in St Croix and sailed to Buck Island……”
Of course, we couldn’t leave it like that, so Team P. stopped into Tenants on our way home and shared a few adult beverages with Chris & Deb. Here is a shot of the revelry.
By the way, that shot of all the kids on the Rhodes was not an isolated event. When we stopped in the second time, we saw this. Apparently, sending gaggles of kids out to sea on a small boat is a thing in Tenants Harbor
