Last Week’s Racing
Five teams made it out for perfect Twilight evening. Here is a summary from Steve Uhl.
“A gorgeous night with a steady sea breeze allowed for a long run to Greys Rock, and a long, fair beat back. Lisa & Frank McNamara made their Twilight debut, and won the start, but Steve Uhl was able to slip past them on the run. On the beat back, boats on the right, including Steve, got a little more pressure. Hope to see some more of you out in the remaining twilights.”
We, there you have it. A little vague as to the outcome, but that’s probably because he won yet again and didn’t want to say so, so I will. For the record, taking 1st was Steve Uhl, followed by Team McNamara in 2nd, getting in some tiller time before Nationals, and finishing 3rd was Team Martini. Honorable mentions to John Casler in 4th and Jay Wagerin 5th. Congrats to all.
Out on the MRA line, another beautiful day. The forecast called for plenty of sun with a southeasterly about 10 knots, and from the looks of the CYC web cam, that’s about we got. Team P. couldn’t be out as we were off trying to get our money’s worth out of our cruising boat. But five teams did show up, and though small in absolute terms, is not inconsistent with the RW recovering, family vacation taking, dog days of summer time of year.
Included in those five was the season debut of Matt Hooks, sailing, I assume, with long time teammate Rob Pascal. They were unable to free themselves for Race Week, but are very much free for Nationals, and if this debut performance was any indication, we can all expect them to come out swinging. Looking very much in mid-season form, they announced their arrival by rolling a 1-1-1 for 3 points to win the day, putting us all on noticed that they are back and ready to rumble. Finishing 2nd was Team Lane / Heffernan, absent Lady Rene this week, who put up a 3-2-2 for 7 points, and taking 3rd was Team Gabriel with a 4-3-3 for 10 points. Honorable mentions go to Team Morgan / Rothwell in 4th with a 2-DNF-DNS for 12 points, and Team Martini in 5th with a 5-4-DNS for 13 points. Congrats to all.
So, in Cup competition, Week 12 did nothing to loosen Team Lane / Heffernan’s grip on the standings. The top 10 are listed below.
Week 13 racing will include Twilight Series 2 race 4 on Thursday but no MRA racing on Saturday due to the Ted HoodRegatta.
Other News, Notices & Miscellaneous Scuttlebutt
Nationals Measuring –If you don’t have a certificate, or if your certificate is out of date because you made alterations to the boat since the last time you were measured, please email Stefan Thibodeaux at sjthibodeaux@gmail.com to schedule a measurement.
If You Spin, Send It In – We got a late RW spin report from David Rubin. “Kim: Last week during Race Week, we fouled #2651 on a starboard port crossing. It was on Saturday, Race #2 or 3. Mark and I were on port, did not tack in time and 2651, who was on starboard, altered course to avoid contact. We did our spin.” Thanks David & Mark for leaving it on the course.
A reminder that if you spin, please let me know at kpandapas@comcast.net with the subject line ‘Spins.’
We got this shot of Fleet Alum Katie Bloxham sailing their Fatty Knees around Maine’s Long Cove next to Tenant’s Harbor. She later swung by and offered Team P. a chance to take a spin, but we both declined. I’m pretty sure I would have ended up swimming if I tried to sail that little thing. Call it Laser PTSD.
Also in Long Cove, we got this shot of a Rhodes 19, which more resembled a clown car. It begs the question – just how many people can you cram into a Rhodes 19? (At least 10.)
Mail Bag
Timmy D. wrote in to update us on the full name of his crew, referred to last week in these pages as Connor the Engineer. “It was a pleasure to be out yesterday. Thanks for the shout out for my crew CONNOR WEST.” As a GW graduate, Connor clearly comes with high quality sailing credentials in the company of other notable GW grads like Miranda Bakos and Mike Lane.
