Last Week’s Racing

There was no twilight racing this past week.

Out on the MRA line, there also was no racing, though not for lack of trying.  The forecast was for a south wind around 11 kt, with a chance of showers and thunderstorms, mainly after 9am.  That’s where we started.  The fog rolled in mid-morning,
socking in the harbor, and the radar showed a big green and yellow blob heading our way and expected to arrive around noon.  MRA hoisted AP at 10am, saying that the earliest they’d drop it was 1pm, suggesting first gun at 2pm.  Conditions seemingly improved
a bit as the morning wore on, with bits of blue sky poking through every now and then.  But the radar also showed more blobs headed our way, so not an easy call.  At 11:30, they cancelled the Townies and at 11:50, they cancelled everyone else.

These kinds of situations are never an easy.  They are tough calls and I’m glad I don’t have to make them.  Holding out until 1PM meant a lot of waiting around for everyone – race committee volunteers and sailors.  And there was no guarantee
AP would even come down at 1.  If it did, with all fleets on the consolidated line, under the best of scenarios, our first gun would have been no earlier than 2:30.  And with thunderstorms a lingering possibility, there is a pretty good probability we’d have
gotten in just one race.  Worth it?  Making the decision at noon to blow it off salvaged a good part of everyone’s day.  Of course, as it turned out, the storms never came and we had a nice sailing day, as demonstrated by
Team AMV and Marine Regnault sailing around all afternoon.  But hey, that’s sailboat racing.  I tip my hat to the folks doing their best to make the right call.

By the way, as you know, the fleet is holding its clinic on Saturday, so will not participate in MRA Series 2 Day 4.  So with two days of that series sailed, we have just one more, which won’t be until Saturday July 20th, which
is the weekend before RW.

So, in Cup competition, with no racing this week, there were no changes to the standings.
Steve Uhl hangs onto his lead heading into week 7.   The top 10 are listed below.
