Last Week’s Racing
Our season is winding down. With no more Twilight racing, there was just one scored race day this week – Day 1 of the fall Series.
Four team made it out for what proved to be a fun day of racing. Just one other class – the Vipers, joined us, as the IODs were involved in a regatta and the Townies were sailing their
fall series off the booth. Who knows where the Etchells and J70s were. The RC moved us to Archers Line, which was totally appropriate given the limited attendance. They had to move the signal boat a couple of times as the breeze settled in, which resulted
in a brief postponement. But PRO Mark Toso and his team got us going quickly and ran three W-4s in the 0.5-0.6 range. We were in by 4.
Conditions were lumpy. The forecast predicted SE 5-10, which is about what we got. But the dominant condition on this day was sea state, which included swells in the 4-6 foot range, wrapping
around both sides of Children’s Island, wind-blown chop, and an abundance of motorboat wake coming from every direction. Washing machine for sure. The seas were so big that it was tough to find the mark as it constantly disappeared in the troughs. Had there
been a little more breeze, the surfing would have been fun, but there wasn’t enough pressure for that.
So, taking 1st on the day was
Team Pandapas, who rolled a 1-2-1 for 4 points. Finishing 2nd was
Team Lane / Heffernan with a 2-1-3 for 6 points, and taking 3rd on a tiebreaker was
Marine Regnault & Stefan Thibodeaux, who put up a 4-4-2 for 10 points. Honorable mention to
Team Thornton, with a line of 3-3-4, also for 10 points.
So, in Cup competition, with just two race days left, the lights have dimmed and the band is playing the prelude.
Team Lane / Heffernan’s 23-point lead looks insurmountable. It’s probably big enough for them to stay home the next two weeks and still take it. The top 10 are listed below.
Week 17 racing will include the second day of Fall Series on Saturday 9/14, which we expect will be on South Line with all the other fleets.
