Greeting from the Prez – Spring 2005
With one of New England’s snowiest winters on record behind us, planning is well underway for the upcoming racing season!
REGISTRATION
You all should receive registration material in the mail shortly; if you don’t, you can go to the Fleet 5 web site anytime after April 8th (www.fleet5.org) and download the materials you need. While you’re there, take a look at the web site which has been updated and includes some new photos. We’d like to continue enhancing it, so if you have any good photos in electronic form please send them in. Please include a caption and the date the photo was taken.
SPRING MEETING
We will be having a Season Kick-Off Meeting on April 28th, 6:30PM at theCorinthian Yacht Club. I hope you’ll all attend. Bring your checkbook for one-stop registration for the season.
MEASUREMENT & TUNING CLINIC
To help you sail your best this season, we are planning a Measurement and Tuning Clinic on Sunday June 5th at 11AM at the Corinthian Yacht Club. The discussion will include:
- How to measure your boat
- Explanations of the speed advantages / disadvantages of maximizing/minimizing specific measurements
- Go-fast setup, tuning tips and explanations (mast step location, jib track location, etc)
RULES SEMINARS
On April 20th, Ken Legler the sailing coach at Tufts University will be holding a Rules Seminar at 7PM at the Gerry (210 Beacon Street). There is no fee for attending; there will be a cash bar. For those of you who haven’t attended a seminar by Ken, he is a great speaker and explains the rules very well. Attending a session like this is a great experience, whether to learn the latest intracicies or just to get a good spring refresher. Also, on May 26th 6-9PM in CYC Harbor Room, Pat Stadel, Senior Judge for U.S. Sailing, will be discussing rules changes for 2005-2008. There is no fee for attending this event. We’re planning a full calendar of social events. In addition to a series of parties, we thought we’d try something a little different. In an effort to build awareness of the fleet around Marblehead, once a month following the day’s racing the fleet will be gathering at a different yacht club in Marblehead (details to follow!).
Way back, last November, Fleet 5 wrapped up our season at a party hosted by long time fleet member Bruce Bolen. The party was well attended with many new faces in the crowd. Thank you very much Bruce and Tom Despres for all your hard work. We all had a great time! Several awards were given including the Outstanding Crew award to Miller Shropshire, the President’s Trophy to John Casler for his long time service to the fleet, Most Improved to Karl Renney and Pete Kaznoski and Rookies of the Year to Paul Zymba and Andy Savage. The 2004 Season was dominated by Kimon and Christina Pandapas, winning the Marblehead Racing Association, NOOD Race Week, Labor Day and Season
Overall titles. Other winning teams included Shan McAdoo and Doug Trees for the Spring Series and Mike Lane for the Fall Series. A new group of officers were also installed. This year the “Spring Series” has been replaced by a kick-off Spring Regatta to be held May 29th-30th. This should be a great event, and a good motivator to get your boats put together and come out racing. The East Coast Championships will be held in Hingham August 12-14. For those who haven’t raced in Hingham before, it is a great venue – nice smooth water and a great host club. I hope you’ll join me in attending.
