Road to the Cup – Week 7

Road To The Cup – Week 7 Top-10 as of 7/10/16   We had an impressive turnout of 7-8 boats for Twilights on Thursday night, including Carl & Isabella Renny sailing on old partner Pete Kaznoski’s boat, and the unanticipated and thoroughly anticlimactic return to Twilights of Team Pandapas, who hadn’t made that scene for … Read more

Road to the Cup – Week 6 – 2016

Road To The Cup – Week 6 Top-10 as of 7/3/16   I’d like to take a moment to remember Elise Caswell, who passed away unexpectedly last week.  Elise was the free-est of free spirits and just a sweet, gentle soul.  She and husband Steve Caswell were active fleet members through the 90s when they … Read more

Road to the Cup – Week 5 – 2016

Top-10 as of 6/26/16   Before I get started, please note that NOOD Registration is open.  You can register right now by clicking here.   Four boats made it out for Twilights, to do beer-can battle in conditions that included 2-3 knots from the east with gusts to 15 from the south and alternatively gusts … Read more

Road to the Cup – Week 3 – 2016

We’re saddened to learn of the passing of Dru Slattery’s mom.  Our thoughts are with Dru and her family during this difficult time.   The RC fired off three on Thursday night, in deference to the 25 knot northwesterly (with puffs to 30).  I’m sure the Twilight regulars were pretty pissed off about that, right?  … Read more

Road to the Cup – Week 2 – 2016

Our first Twilight of the season was held Thursday night, and Steve Uhl was kind enough to provide this account.   “Four boats showed up for a misty damp but solid southeasterly breeze Thursday night.  The course was a reach to Fort Sewall then a nice long beat to Archer Rock and back – twice … Read more

Road to the Cup – Week 1 – 2016

I’d like to pause to remember Tom King, who passed away unexpectedly on May 15th at the young age of 44 (Boston Globe obit here).  Tom sailed with Steve Uhl for close to 10 years and was one of the nicest guys you’d ever meet.  He started out without a lot of experience but just wanted to get involved … Read more

Road To The Cup – Week 19

Road To The Cup – Week 19

Top-10 as of 9/27/15

Before we get started, I’d like to pause and remember Karen Finocchio’s mom Louise Hansen Finocchio, who passed away last week.  There probably are not many of us who knew Louise personally, which by all accounts is profoundly our loss.  But anyone who has spent more than a minute on the Corinthian deck surely caught a glimpse of Karen and her Mom sharing time together.  If one measure of a life well lived is the love and adulation of our kids, Louise soared.  I’ve never seen a more loving and caring relationship between mother and daughter than that between Karen and her mom, which is both heart-warming and a hugely useful lessen in how to prioritize the important things in life.  The collective hearts of Fleet 5 go out to Karen and her family during this difficult time.  You can read more about Louise at www.salemnews.com/obituaries/louise-hansen-finocchio/article_603c60c9-2dd1-5c58-8c67-4f5b92e1b84d.html?mode=jqm.

Road To The Cup Week 18

We have a few items from the mailbag this week.

First, you may recall that *Charlie Pendleton & Ben Richardson* were racing
for the EYC in the New York Yacht Club Invitational Cup (www.nyyc.org/yachting/invitational-cup/2015-invitational-cup) on a boat
skippered by *Bill Lynn*. You’ll be pleased to know that they did EYC and
Fleet 5 proud, finishing 3rd in a fleet of 17 boats with 78 points over 12
races, one point behind NYYC in 2nd and just 7 points behind Royal Thames
YC who won it with 71 points. This regatta looked like a dogfight that
absolutely came down to the final race, but EYC sailed well and kicked
hiney. Congratulations to them. (*Editor’s note – Last time I used the
word hiney, it sparked a lengthy email exchange with Shannon Lane who
challenged the correct spelling of that word, and frankly, seemed to enjoy
the topic. In deference to Shannon and in the hope of not arousing her
again, I have used her spelling.*)

Road To The Cup – Week 17

*Road To The Cup – Week 17* *Top-10 as of 9/13/15* I have been delinquent in failing to report the sad news of *Bill Lampe’s* passing this spring. Anyone who’s been around the class for a while and attended a Nationals or two would have had a hard time not getting to know Bill, who sailed with the Chicago fleet. If there was a more gregarious, personable, fun-loving guy in our class than Bill, I sure didn’t know him. This short piece from Fleet 12 sums it up. “*Bill Lampe*, 69, passed away in his home on May 31, 2015, of complications from diabetes. Bill was the owner of Rhodes 19, PAX, a brand new Stuart Rhodes. He was fleet captain of our Fleet 12, chaired the Nationals here at CCYC in 1993 and was class president from 1999 through 2001. He went to every Nationals he could and in *Rodney Dangerfield* fashion took pride in having the longest streak of finishing last in the Nationals. Participation, not winning was his thing. He sold his boat in 2000 and moved to Colorado with his wife, Mary, whom he had married in 1984. He was a jack-of-all-trades, especially enjoying photography and cooking. He loved to make people laugh and laugh with them.” [image: F5F617FE-31BC-486C-9859-7B66243A4D56.png] What a guy. He is missed.
